Product Description

    Details

This roaster uses a 1200 Watt power block heating element, unlike others you will see on the 'net for more money (and 400 watts less, which causes roasting to take longer)!

In a 1lb roast, with an ambient temperature of 65 degrees, a complete roast from beginning to end took 19 minutes to get to dark (thoroughly into 2nd crack).

The pan is extremely easy to clean and in our testing under rather adverse conditions (consecutive roasts, roasts in cold temperatures), this roaster held up. The roaster itself is rated for 750 grams, which is actually considerably more than a 1lb (but less than 2). However, our experience with it has us recommend it for batches of 1 lb or less. The roasting distribution is just better this way!

Full 1 year warranty. If you have an issue within the first year of use, all you will need to do is submit a video of the defective unit to us via email and we will process your warranty directly. (*Warranty void if used outside of North America)

    Watch the unboxing video here. The only assembly required is attaching the knob to the lid, which is shown in the video.;

    1. Not for Dark Roasts Review by Gerald

      Aftertaste

I purchased this roaster to augment my Fresh Roast FR 500. I roast outdoors because of the very strong smells that roasting creates. The FR simply struggles to get beyond the first crack in ambient temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. And, I prefer Italian roast Colombia beans as the base for all of my blends. When the temperature permits, I can get a perfect Italian roast with the FR, every time. The resultant coffee is deeply rich and complex, with no bitterness and the sweetness of the beans retained.

Not so with this Home Roaster. Even following the tips provided by Coffee Project with the roaster, I cannot produce a proper second crack roast. The beans are always dried out and slightly charred, no matter how careful I am to watch them. The resultant coffee is flat, one-dimensional, and bitter. Like Starbuck's. Bad coffee from excellent source beans? Not for me.

I even found medium roasted coffee from this roaster disappointing.

So here are my conclusions -

      PROS:
      Large batches
      Quiet
      Not a lot of smoke

      CONS:
Cannot properly roast beans to the second crack
      No chaff control
Beans must be cooled in a separate container, e.g. a mesh sieve

All in all, I would not recommend this roaster. I am an experienced home roaster, and yet, after ruining several pounds of high-grade coffee beans with the Home Roaster, experimenting with technique and watching the roasting process carefully, I found it impossible to produce roasted coffee that resulted in an acceptable brewed cup.
