Ethiopia East Harrar 4 Nafisifi Zoom

Ethiopia East Harrar 4 Nafisifi

Flavor notes: ripe, blueberry, concord grape, deep chocolate, ripe fruit, red wine-like, herbal
We are SUPER excited about this coffee! This coffee takes us back to the days of the renowned Harrar Horse. For the last decade, the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange has greatly improved price transparency and has led to higher cherry prices for the farmer but at the expense of traceability. The ECX technically made it illegal for an exporter to be both involved at the farm or mill level and involved in the exporting of coffee. Abdullah Bagersh's famous Misty Valley mill (no called Aricha), had to be sold. Countless projects were essentially scrapped as exporter involvement and crucial funding dried up.
Fortunately, this year new rules are in place which has opened the door once again to direct sales by mills to foreign buyers. This has greatly loosened the restrictions on exporter involvement. As a result of this opening, Rashid is on the ground in East Harar with a new raised-bed project called Nafisifi.
Some mild inconsistencies in color are why it's received the grade 4 designation. Roasting may reveal a few quakers. The seed are relatively small, long in shape, dry with stable water activity and a surprisingly low density. Per the original tradition in Ethiopia, this coffee is dried in the cherry. It will reach first-crack quickly, so this is one you'll want to watch carefully.

Product Description

Ethiopia East Harrar 4 Nafisifi Lot 3011 GrainPro is sourced from family-owned farms in the legendary Harari region best known for the Harrar Horse coffee brand, which hasn’t been on the Royal cupping table for several decades. Rashid Abdullahi, co-founder of Nafisifi (the exporting company that sourced this lot) is also a descendant of the Horse. Rashid is the nephew of Mohamed Adullahi Ogsadey, the Somali King who made the Horse brand famous. Rashid has spent the better part of two decades trying to put a Harrar, with all the luster of the past, back to the Royal cupping table. Rashid personally selected the cherries and implemented a raised bed project to ensure meticulous drying protocols. This is also the first year since the creation of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange that new rules permit export directly to Royal. The stars have aligned and somewhere the spirit of the Somali King is smiling.
