Gene Cafe Home Coffee Roaster

Gene Cafes - Are awesome.

...In the evolution of home coffee roasters there was always one machine, or two, that did the job the best depending on the consumers need. But each roaster is eclipsed by the next better thing. The Gene Roaster takes center stage when you need more roasted coffee than an SR500 will produce. The happiness factor scores an all time high on Gene Cafe.

You’ll get the Sumo Sized chaff collector. That's standard now. This large chaff collector allows you to attach a 3" metal duct for venting outside or right up to your stove top exhaust. A small amount of coffee or a relatively light roast produces little visible smoke, but if you use a large load and like shiny dark beans, you'll want to vent the roaster.

This is a good choice if you like simplicity in roasters. Also, a good choice if you find that you're roasting all the time with your SR500 roaster. The Gene roasts about twice as much per batch as the SR500's. There are other roasters out there designed to do darker roasts, but they can be more than twice the price of a Gene Cafe and require some programming. This is a good machine if you prefer seeing the beans as they roast and judging the progression by eyes, ears, and nose. Even if you use any two of those, you're still better than any computer when it comes to roasting coffee :) The Gene Cafe coffee roaster uses an off axis rotating chamber to mix the beans

The Gene Cafe coffee roaster uses an off axis rotating chamber to mix the beans while a low volume of hot air blows, carrying chaff away to a chaff collector.

• The Gene Roaster is easy to use. It's as easy to use as a Fresh Roast Roaster. It's intuitive. WAY the heck more obvious and satisfying than a Hot Top, less expensive too.

• It roasts 250g (8.8oz) of green coffee beans at a time. Yes, you can always roast less than a full batch if you don't need the entire capacity.

• It's worth every cent. It sounds like a lot of money, but figure that it's about 3-4 cents per cup. If you're roasting now on a smaller home machine, you'll drastically cut down the time you spend roasting coffee each week. You'll have infinite control and high visibility of the beans.

• The details are there You can even dump a batch of beans to cool externally and start a new batch immediately. Other machines require an extended cooldown period. While not intended to do this indefinitely, that means you've roasted almost a pound and a half before any other home roaster could should you choose to.

• Great Controls Two knobs- time and temperature, simple as that. No presets, nothing to program. You see a readout of where you are in time and temperature and you control the roast in an entirely intuitive way. The big glass chamber lets you see the roast progress the whole way. • Its got one of the BEST designed, and informative manuals of any home roaster.

• It's real consumer appliance that anyone can use. It's good looking, highly intuitive, and it works.

The Gene Roaster is:
Quiet and cost effective. It has full control and Full visibility of the beans. The Gene Roaster is a winner.

Well, I have had an FR 500 for over a year, and I liked it, but had two complaints: 1. The volume of coffee roasted in each batch is somewhat small, relative to my needs. 2. I could not really get a true "second crack" Italian roast out of this roaster without worrying that I migh damage it. I also didn't like the fiddly timer. So, I bought a Gene Cafe. It has double the capacity of the FR 500, and it has excellent dual dial controls for time and temperature. It is well-made, and it easily produces an excellent Itlaian roast, or anything lighter. But, if you do choose to go to a second crack roast with this machine, better warn the local fire department and your neighbors first. It puts out enough smole to set off every smoke dectector within a mile radius. Now, that may be an exaggeration, but it is certainlt the case that this roaster could not possibly be used indoors to produce an Italian roast, no matter if you had the world's strongest exhaust fan. If you only roast to a light to perhaps "Full City" level, you might be OK indoors.
After using both the FR500, and the much more expensive Gene Cafe, I have to say that I prefer the FR500. Why? Because the Gene Cafe doesn't save any time, for one thing. Even though it has twice the capacity of the FR 500, it takes more than twice as long to do a dark roast and then cool down. It takes up four times as much space on the counter, and in the storage cabinet. It is much harder to clean the chamber on the Gene Cafe.
I will undoubtedly continue to use both roasters, for different purposes. But if I'm in a hurry, or I don't absolutely have to have Italian roast ( the FR 500 does a perfectly good French roast ), I'll choose the FR500. It's just a simpler machine to deal with. All in all, it's a better value. (Posted on 11/9/2015)

I've been roasting my own green beans for a few years now, and have been thinking of upgrading my popcorn machine for the past few. The popcorn machine just doesn't get hot enough and provide a nice consistent roast.
I've done my research and finally decided to pull the trigger on the Gene Cafe (in red). When I got it, I was a bit surprised by the size, but it's beautiful and performs. I've roasted a few batches, and it's far quieter than the air popper, and gives a very consistent roast color and the flavor is far superior than what I was getting from my air popper. I would highly recommend this roaster, and buy from coffeeeproject.com. James was very helpful (even though the red one was on backorder) in informing me of the status of my order along the way. The free beans were a nice addition!
signed, a very satisfied customer that wishes I would have bought this a few years ago! (Posted on 6/12/2015)

I have had this for many years, and it is indeed a good roaster. Despite what the literature says about doing serial roasts though, you really need to let this cool down for a half hour before starting the next roast. if you don't that heating element will become warped and burn out early. Speaking of heating elements, this roaster is not the most technician friendly to work on, as you have to unscrew the heat shield, split the case open to replace the chip, heating element, and anything else. The bezels on either side of the drum have to be carefully reinstalled before putting back on the heat shield, and they are delicate.

I use this roaster in addition to a Hot Top to roast 3 pounds of bean on the weekend for Sunday coffee hours at Church. The Hot Top is very technician friendly, but they are twice the price what I paid, so I am not sure if I would recommend it now. (Posted on 8/7/2014)

Bought this to replace my iroast 2. I've been roasting for many years. This is my 7th roaster and so far is the easiestto use and most consistant roaster I've used. The large size and quietness are great. I would highly recommend the Gene. (Posted on 3/27/2013)

I have had this Roaster for a little more than ten months now and I have been roasting coffee for over 2 1/2 years using two other methods before this roaster. After much research I felt this roaster would be the best one for my needs. After some 50 uses now, I can safely say this purchase was well worth every penny. My only regret is that I did not purchase it sooner. It is super simple to use, but you do have to invest some time and effort to find the perfect balance of time and heat settings in order to achieve your perfect roast. (My first batch came out super-oily and almost black, but very smooth.) As has been stated in the previous review, this roaster does smoke a lot. But that is part of the process. I always roast outside, but maintain a log of all the different coffees I like along with the appropriate settings. In the winter though, I have to add two or three minutes to each batch roasted. During the winter, I watch the roast very closely to get my desired result. This is not a little appliance. It is some 19 inches wide, 9 inches deep and 10 1/2 tall at the Chaff Collector end. In conclusion, I have no regrets over this purchase. The machine is solid and I am sure it will continue to serve me well for many years. (Posted on 3/4/2013)

    7. Excellent roaster easy to use Review by Peter

I have used this roaster since it was first introduced and roast about 5lbs a month. It is easy to use and does a beautiful light or dark roast. It is very easy to use and with proper outside ventilation which is easy to set up there is little smoke inside even for a dark roast. However because it can roast at high temps you do need to keep an eye on it when roasting at high temps for longer periods to get you that really dark roast. I just torched mine which was completely user error and not the machine. If you roast alot of coffee and want professional quality roasts, especially if you like a dark roast this is an excellent choice. Initial cost is high but if you roast frequently then the price will be worth it in the long run (Posted on 11/17/2010)
