Product Description

Uganda A Mt. Elgon Kapchorwa

The majority of Uganda’s arabica is grown on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, however the Kibale Forest on the country’s western border supports a substantial coffee area too...

THIS coffee is grown by a group of small farm holders within the region on the western side of the mountain (an extinct volcano, actually.) This high grown, fully washed, 100% shade grown coffee, is a mixed varietal.

The coffee is spicy and citrusy, smooth, with nice earthiness, semi-sweet chocolate and rich wood flavors. Look for a sweet and floral finish. It’s more floral in lighter roasts, earthier in darker roasts.

The varietals are SL14, SL34, KP423, Nyasaland and Bugisu. Nyasaland is Uganda’s oldest variety of coffee, while SL (Scott’s Lab) are not newfangled ones, just a modern categorization of beans, each with their own nature, working together for an amazing cup.

Almost a thousand Kapchorwa farmers have contributed to this lot. The farmers shared growing and processing resources including greenhouses, an Arabica nursery for saplings, and a washing station. They all enjoy the volcanic mountain soil which is perfect for growing coffee. And, large leaf banana trees that grow alongside the coffee contributing to the 100% natural shade canopy. Each farmer manages their own 1 hectare farm and is responsible for the production of about 1,000 arabica trees that make up these beans.

In addition to lush, steep mountain forests, Uganda is blessed with two annual rainy seasons, beautiful rivers, and currently one of the top ten coffee producers in the world, the second largest in Africa. "The mountain slopes enjoy plenty of rainfall – even during the dry season these areas remain lush and verdant - and the numerous lakes and rivers nourish the soil throughout the year. "

In Uganda, coffee is the nation’s top grossing export, accounting for roughly 20% of all exports.
