It's well worth noting that a lot of coffee out there in the specialty coffee market are grown organically and with lotsa love just due to historical farming practices and the high cost or impracticalities of dealing with chemical anything or foreigners with clipboards. These coffees listed DO have the certs.

Putting that another way, being certified only means its certified. It doesn't mean that non-certified coffees are grown by haters.

One of the very best things you can do for the world, is get your friends off conglomerate mass produced coffee and bring them to Specialty Coffee in any form. If its a local roaster or even Starbucks for that matter the chances of Specialty Coffee being grown in highly ethical ways is nearly a sure thing even if its not certified as such. Certifications ARE good, they let you know for sure, but- can also exclude deserving farmers and farmers who for whatever reasons, including simple economics, cannot be certified.

What can you do if you if your goal is to do good? If your friends' coffee comes already ground up in a can or a brick, the corporations of that coffee are possibly not lead by ethics as much as profits. Nudging your friends toward ANY Specialty Coffee is a huge step toward the fairness of trade and care of the world, rewarding quality, and rewarding loving farmers. Certifications have value for sure, but are not the whole story.
